Commercial awareness questions: "Tell us about a trend affecting our industry"
Pick one trend, give one piece of evidence for it, and explain what it means for this employer and for someone starting in the role. Depth on one issue beats a list of buzzwords.
What the question looks like
Employers word it in different ways:
- "Tell us about a social, technological, economic or environmental trend that will affect our industry."
- "What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our sector?"
- "Tell us about a recent news story that caught your interest and why."
For example, Rolls-Royce's published early-careers guide (2024) asks applicants for one social, technological, economic or environmental issue or trend that will affect the way it works, and why. Rolls-Royce isn't connected with Aplara and doesn't endorse it.
What recruiters look for
- You follow the news. Something current, not a topic everyone mentioned five years ago.
- You understand cause and effect. Why the trend matters, not just that it exists.
- You link it to them. What it means for this employer's products, customers or costs.
- You link it to the role. What it might mean for the work you'd do.
A structure to follow
- The trend: one sentence.
- The evidence: one fact, figure or event that shows it's happening.
- The effect on the employer: how it changes their work, risks or opportunities.
- The link to you: why it interests you and what it means for someone starting in the role.
Where to find a trend: the employer's annual report or results announcement, its news page, trade publications for the sector, and the business pages of a national newspaper.
Example answer
Sam is a fictional second-year mechanical engineering student. Northbridge Aerospace is a fictional employer. The details are invented to show the shape of a good answer. Use your own.
Sustainable aviation fuel is the trend I think will change Northbridge's work most. UK rules now require airlines to use a growing share of it, so engines must run reliably on new fuel blends. Different blends burn differently, which affects combustion temperatures, emissions and component life. For Northbridge that means more combustion and durability testing, and possibly new materials in the hottest parts of the engine. For a placement student, it means test work is growing, not shrinking. I've followed this because our Formula Student team debated switching to a renewable fuel, and I wrote the comparison of how each fuel would change our engine tuning. I'd like to see how the same questions are answered at full scale.

Common mistakes
- A list of trends. Three trends in one sentence each shows less than one explained properly.
- "AI will change everything." Fine as a topic, but only with specifics about this employer.
- No link to the employer. A good summary of the news that never says why it matters to them.
- Out-of-date facts. Check your evidence is current before you submit.
- AI-generated facts. If a tool gives you a statistic, find the original source before you use it.
FAQs
What counts as commercial awareness?
Understanding how an organisation makes money or delivers its service, who its customers are, and what affects it from outside.
Can I choose a trend from outside the industry?
Yes, if you explain clearly how it affects this employer, for example a change in regulation, the economy or technology.
How current does my example need to be?
Ideally from the last year. Older trends work if you show what's happening with them now.
